Granite Boulders

The granite boulders seen in our Garden were formed approximately 1.4 billion years ago when magma welled up from the earth’s mantle, slowly cooled and solidified deep underground. These formations are now visible due to uplifting and/or surface erosion.

Slow cooled granite boulders such as we see int eh Garden are characterized by rounded contours and large obvious white quartz crystals. These boulders erode easily due to feldspar (a weaker clay-like compound) which is part of the granite composite.

Decomposed granite makes up much of the pathway throughout the garden.
